O massacre de Katyń

68th anniversary of the Katyn genocide decision
2008-03-05, 15:21
Today is the 68th anniversary of the signing of the death verdict on 22 thousand Polish citizens - the military, but also intellectual elites, who were executed by the Soviets in 1940.
However, until today the Russian authorities refuse to consider the Katyn massacre a genocide and some media even go as far as denying the Soviet responsibility for the murder.
For over five decades of communist rule in Poland, the truth about the Katyn genocide was silenced. It was only in 1990 that the Soviet Union authorities admitted that NKVD was guilty of the crime. Eight years ago, on the 60th anniversary of the massacre, Polish cemeteries were opened on the site of the tragedy.
